You could be correct. I'll try and remember to take a look at my '76 Fury Sport. It has an 8-1/4" in it. I cannot remember if it has a drain plug in it or not. I think the 8-1/4 covers varied over the years.
FWIW, it looks like an 8-1/4" rear end to me. The drawing above is misleading as to what an 8-1/4" actually looks like. Yours looks like an 8-1/4"

It sounds like the plastic speedo gear is not meshing with the trans output shaft worm gear.

There maybe wider 14" tires out there, but 245 is the widest I know about.

According to the Direct Connection book I have, it’s says +0.060” is max overbore from standard 383 bore of 4.250”. So, max bore dia for a 383 would be 4.310”
