That is a newer starter that looks like a mid 90's Dodge truck or even 3.3 Caravan. I guess it could be a quote, "mini-starter" that Mopar Performance advertises but I think they might even be a current model starter, too. No starter of this old vintage looked (or sounded) like that one. Try comparing it to one of those mentioned above in a bone yard. If that is the case, not sure any of those were designed for a 13:1. Most soccer mom caravans don't have 13:1! Did I miss a post? What did you do about your transmission issues?

You didn't miss a quote regarding the transmission. Here's what I have so far...
The price to do a transmission swap is around $4000, which is the cost of a rebuilt 4 speed transmission 18 spline plus the conversions bits and pieces. I found a shop in Sacramento that will rebuild the 727 for less than $1000. Right now I don't have the resources to throw $4k at my car. So, I'm going back with the slushy for now, and plan on buying the necessary parts for the conversion swap over the next year. Wish it weren't so, but I do want to drive my car every now and again in the meantime.

The nose is broken off that starter.... So yea, you'll be replacing it and they probably won't accept it as a core for a rebuilt unit.

Look in the bellhousing for the broken pieces before you do anything else.

The transmission is out of the car and no bits and pieces were found. I found the starter below online and believe it will do the job.

I imagine that it will have a higher torque rating than the one I just removed?

Well.... The fact that the nose isn't broken off the new one is a huge factor....

I'm honestly in disbelief that the old starter even worked in that condition, let alone started a high compression engine.

Today I dropped off the transmission to have it rebuilt. I stayed there to see what went wrong...

Turns out the governer (spelling?) broke and the debris messed up some other things in the shaft. Also had the converter cut open drained, cleaned up and freshened with a new hub. I'm going to upgrade the existing 2.9 "rocker arm looking thing" in the transmission to a 5.0 to allow for real crisp 1st to 2nd shifts. I was told the 2.9 is stock.

I should have it back in a week!! But I also need to pickup a new starter, transmission mount from energy etc and have the transmission frame powder-coated.

I'm going to flush both transmission coolers with brake kleen to get rid of any potential metal debris/shavings.

Good to hear you are going forward with the rebuild, flushing out the trans cooler is a great idea.

I decided I would just toss out both trans coolers just in case there would have been any contaminants in them that I couldn't get out. Plus they were quite old and messed up. I'm going to buy a large 11" x 11" x 1.75" B&M stacked cooler (plate and fin) design which is supposed to be more efficient then the older type models (tube and fin). This coupled with the extra 2 quart deep trans pan should keep the transmission running just great!!

On a side note, I found an 18 spline in my state and the buyer is asking $500! I'm negotiating shipping on it. Hopefully I can pick it up and slowly begin collecting conversion parts!! Woot woot!

yup. the only diff in the older 833s is '65 IIRC because they use the trunion joint, but physically they are the same.

Should get my transmission back either on Friday or sometime next week. I'm waiting for the 5.1 kickdown lever to arrive to bring to the trans shop to replace the 2.9. I was told this will firm up my 1-2 shift.

While I'm waiting for the transmission I decided to clean up the transmission cross-member prior to sand blasting and powder-coating it black. Boy oh boy was it dirty. I probably took 1/2 pound of dirt/grease/gunk off of it! Also noticed that the transmission mount reads "Made in Korea". What the heck is that? I hope this isn't a stock piece lol. Upgraded that to a new black energy suspension mount too.

Regarding the A-833 transmission for $500 on CL; I was suppose to drive to LA County this morning but the seller said he would be out-of-town today. I was also told via text that he had a local offer of $600. I tried to find the original posting on CL but it has been removed. IMG_20131016_151106_836[1].jpgIMG_20131016_152405_522.jpg

Yes it will, just make sure you get a new pinion bushing for you crank and make sure your new clutch and pressure plate match are also for an 18 spline. I have the same 18 spline in my runner. When do you plan to install? There are some things you need to know about the gear position before you attach your linkage.

4speed,

I'm planning to install it in a year or so. Just wanted to find and buy the 4 speed first to start this en-devour, so-to-speak. I don't know what kind of gears are in the a-833 now, but I plan on buying Jaime Passons Hemi overdrive gear kit and then sending the gears to Liberty to have them worked on (pro shifted). I don't have any linkage or anything else now. But, I'd like to upgrade the normal skinny kinked linkage with with beefier linkage.

Thanks for the info on the new pinion bushing and clutch/pressure plate matching. I'm sure when this moves forward in the future i'll be here to ask more questions :)

Nice pics of your transmission. Did you pressure blast it and then paint it? I'd like to clean up the casing on the one I bought too.

I have a long road to travel before this puppy is ready to be installed. Meanwhile I need to pick up the 727 that was rebuilt in Sacramento.

Yes I did pressure wash it, removed all the old street grim. I then used a wire brush to remove any loose paint. Then I repainted it with left over black VHT exhaust manifold paint. the inside gears look pretty good and clean.
