Can anyone tell be what size oil pan would be stock for 383. While looking on the net I'm seeing different capacity sizes.

My 1969 HP 440 HOLDS 5 qt with the filter I would think a 383 would be the same

If you're doing a nut & bolt resto then you are looking for a pan with "402" stamped on the bottom of it. 4 qt. capacity, plus 1 qt. with the filter.

If you are not doing a nut & bolt resto, then why limit yourself to only 5 quarts of oil? Use the late Hemi pan. 6 + 1 capacity. Your engine will thank you.

Why? What difference does the amount of oil sitting in the sump make? :huh:

High RPMs will suck it dry. Even highway driving and being a low on oil can do it. One big culprit is high volume oil pumps which are not needed on mild big blocks.

Hard to imagine it would be designed with a flaw like that.

Never experienced that on my first one (and it was run to high RPM).

Its not a factory flaw. If you install a non-factory high volume pump you'll have the chance pump the stock pan dry. Even with the factory pan if you stabbed the brakes really hard you would likely see your oil light come on. The reason for that warning light coming on during hard braking is because the oil moves away from the sump and the pump starts cavitating (sucking air). I have a HEMI pan but have not yet installed it. Hopefully I can get it done sometime soon.

Ahhh, so this is based on a "non-factory high volume pump". Now THAT I could understand, but it was not previously mentioned.
