I am considering replacing my points system with a Pertronix system. Is this a bad idea? I hear the Pertronix works well and helps the car perform better and I like the fact that it would look stock.

Sounds like a good idea to me. There's a reason why they don't put points in new cars today... 
But don't ask about updating your starter to a new mini-starter...some of the angry old white dudes on here are still convinced that the earth is flat and they just won't go for that... :acme:

I say go for the pertronix system I have it in my car works for me.
Had a mini starter in but, took it out and went back to earth is flat type starter.

Here's another vote for the Pertronics. I have a Pertronics II in all 3 of my cars and am very happy with how the cars run. I haven't had any starter issues, so I can't help there, but I do prefer the sound of the original and they work fine for me!!

Thanks for the input on the points conversion to Pertronics. Do I go with type I, II or III. Also, do you have to run a new wire from the ignition switch to the coil to get 12 volts for the hotter coil?

the world IS flat Frenchy....and I pulled the electronics out of mine after being stopped dead in the water several times. Haven't missed a beat with points.

As I mentioned I run the II version in my cars and I use the stock coil with no issues. The only extra wire is part of the Pertronics. One goes to the coil while the other goes to a full voltage wire before the ballast resistor. That is where I connected my wire, to the power wire going into the resistor. Their instructions are pretty clear so just follow them and you'll be fine. Take that from a guy who hates doing electrical and I got it to work on the first try.
