Ray has voted himself off of Phord Island 3.8 and buried his torch in the sand on his way out...

Nice score for $100, Tom.

I keep on hearing about the head bolt issues on the 3.8 v6 furd motor
Anyone have any insights?
should I just drop in the 5.0 and change out the rear end?
I really just want to get the car up and running, just because it's a vert. Play toy
I got the bird for banging gears. matter of fact I had her out this morning, always good for a smile on your face :drive: :drive:

Stuart wasn't kidding about my newfound "familiarity" with the 3.8. You must have missed this thread. Even the head bolts are discussed. They are disposable and despite the "WTF???" torque sequence they are a piece of cake. MoparChris had wrenched on a bunch of these in a previous life so he was a tremendous help as I had never even had a valve cover off of one before.

Which engine you go with depends entirely on what you want to do with it. Probably be nice to grab all of the goodies (ECM, harness, etc.) out of a 5.0-equipped mustang if you go that route, but many of these swaps have been executed and a couple of hours on a late model mustang forum will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know to pull it off.

Here's the thread:

After reading that, I think I will go with the used small block, ECM and wiring harness.
I will start checking yards around here

The 3.8 is a great motor. It has fragile head gaskets. If you never over heat one it will live forever or if you change the head gaskets with the updated versions from Fel Pro then they are quite reliable. As with any aluminum headed engine head gaskets are fragile. The 3.8 gets a bum rap since the cooling systems can become troublesome with neglect and a teenager driving, Ithink Ray knows what I mean. So my vote is to get a used motor put a good set of head gaskets on it before installing and dont forget the NEW head bolts and then install it and enjoy. It would be way less work than a v8 swap and less trouble when emissions times comes around (if that applys here). :cents: For a hundred bucks and about a grand more to fix you will be way ahead (no pun intended) and you will have peice of mind knowing that its fixed right and no worries about breakage.

moparchris, sound advise
I have to agree replacing the 3.8 is the way to go, looking here in Atl briefly you can get a 5.0 cheaper than the 3.8. That being said and reading your post, I am just looking to kick around in the car and taking a couple fall trips to Mts. So I will see if I can find a descent 3.8 for sale and go that route
But there rare as hens teeth here for some reason
Again I haven't looked every where yet
Thanks everyone for your help

Does it have rod knock or something? Or bad head gasket.

I got it running just check, either it's #2 or #3 , backfires and knock real loud, I'm thinking rod let loose. I may pull engine this weekend just to see. Depends how hot it gets this weekend , been brutal this summer down south. Still think I may try to find a rebuild, depends on price. found out that jasper wants you to buy thru an installer now, I did hear that their quality went down. again hear say.
any ideal of a fair price on a rebuild?
