Tail Light Lens Too Dark (turning almost black)

Some persons suggest it is an electrical grounding problem, but I don't think so. Just thought I would mention this fact in case anyone else finds their tail lights are dimmer than they would like. My parents had a new '71 Road Runner, so I know what things looked like when factory fresh.

I purchased a used '71 bumper and tail lights for my BBody. I cleaned inside the tail light lenses, painted some reflective silver paint inside, replaced the bulbs. Now the right (passenger) side tail light emits about half the light that the driver's side does. Another owner who has a stash of '71 tail light lenses stated sometimes the older factory lenses turn a lighter color (more pinkish) and sometimes they turn darker (more blackish). Weird.

This could be a ground problem like was stated. Might have old bulb's or improper wattage. I would check all connection's and clean the blub socket's well. Did you clean the out side lens. You stated you cleaned the in side but the out side would get a coat of grime on it like the new plastic head light's do today. Might try some rubbing compound on them and see if their is any tarnish on the lens. Just a few thought's. Russ. :thumbsup2:

Can’t add anymore to Russ’ suggestions. Had same issue with lawnmower headlamps, never mow at night lmao. Decided to clean up as filthy inside; almost just removed for air circulation...after cleaning and got a set of the higher wattage LED bulbs- completely brilliant now.

The backup lights on my RR were dark when I got her. I took them off and thoroughly cleaned them. Once done, they almost looked new. Good luck.
