What size and kind of carb did the 69 383HP engines come with? If it matters mine is a 4 speed car. Dad which is the original keeper said he thought it was a 670? Or something like that? He's not sure though?

If I am not mistaken I believe most came with Carter AVS or AFB carbs installed. I also think they were 650 cfm from the factory. Sure someone else may post up additional info.

Original equipment for '69 non-cruise control cars was a Carter AVS rated at 600 cfm or so. I have read a few articles on them and the actual cfm rating could have been as low as 450 cfm. We have had this discussion before and it was revealed that a member's cruise control equipped '69 road runner had a Holley carb installed as original equipment even though Chrysler never mentioned a Holley being available as original equipment on any of their HP 383's back in the day. The AFB's were used on earlier models. A good swap back then was to get a 440 AVS and place it on the 383. This helped breathing and still looked stock.

My dad bought his 69 383 new and said it came with 600. He tells me that when he did a Holley 780 dual feed and headers that 383 woke up night and day

Nice thread revival.

For my 383HP, I've got a Holley 3310-1 780cfm going atop an Edelbrock DP4B intake. A classic pairing.

I just picked up a DP4B intake yesterday, so after a trip to the blaster and a nice HP orange paint and bolt it on.

69 383's typically came with an AVS and the CFM rating was likely in the 570 CFM range. From what I know Carter did not flow their carbs the same way as Holly did (wet flow vs. dry flow) and never really published CFM numbers for OEM stuff.

So what were the differences in the various Carter AVS numbers used on the 383 RRs. I am working through my new to me 70 RR 383 4spd with N96. It was modified to the 69 fresh air cleaner set up (oval vice round air cleaner) and has the 69 4638S Automatic AC AVS carb. Believe the engine is stock. What difference between this Carb and one that would have been on a manual no AC car? Thanks, G
