- MY name is Kelly Payne I own a 1968 RR The car is the first brand new car my parents bought. I was given the car at age 12 and spent the next 6 years working and saving to rebuild it. Years of sitting after the car was parked from to many weekend excursions at the local hot spot had left it with some minor rust, dried and split interior, and a locked up motor. At age eighteen I started the rebuild at a local votech as part of my classes. The body work was farmed out as well as the interior. My father and I set the motor after a 30 over bore valve job and crank work was done. Much to my regret we had a sabateure come through the shop and was dropping bolts and nuts down any motor they could in the shop. 6 trips down the road, a lot of carburetor backfiring, and # 8 piston had a brand new hole in the top of it, that wouldn't be discovered until I was 30. 30 years old I decided to try again on the bird, I was working at a shop and the owner was accumulating the amount of pay they owed me while I pulled the motor and discovered the #8 piston delema. The owner of the shop filed bankruptcy leaving me with no pay for my 3 years and a $3500 bill at a local machine shop. The owner was nice enough to let me make payments and they kept my motor until I payed it off. with lots of grease and little time the motor was put back together and set in the car. NAFTA came along my parents jobs moved to Mexico and my dream was again postponed as I took care of my parents finances. Now at age 49 I am ready to try one more time to rebuild my dream.
