I guess I will know for sure soon since I'm going to tear down this tranny once and for all in the nearby future.

Still, I'm curious if anyone has had the issue I have. The transmission SLIPS in manual FIRST just like it does in DRIVE. It takes a LOT of RPM to get the car moving from a dead stop.
REVERSE on the other hand works great.

I have rebuilt the front servo and upgraded the rear servo with an aluminum billet type.
I purchased the rear band but decided NOT to replace it because the one in the tranny looks brand new. This transmission is a 1977 TF727. It has LESS than 3K miles and I have had it for three years.
I was using synthetic fluid. My line pressure would read 50 PSI and drop to around 35 PSI once the fluid reached normal running temperature. Replaced the fluid as recommended by the TCI tech. Now it reads about 60 PSI cold and drops to around 50 PSI during normal fluid temperature.

I do get BLACK residue in the bottom of the pan.

I'm pretty sure that my CLUTCHES burned out when the T/C went bad. The car has been acting this way for quite some time. It needed more and more gas to drive off from a dead stop. Once it's moving, it shifts and down shifts OK.

Any similar experiences and/or comments are highly welcome.

This will be my first time rebuilding an automatic transmission but at least I picked on of the easiest out there to work on.

I LOVE this auto/manual transmission when it is working properly.

LG,
Mike

I have heard of this and have experience it with older Auto Transmission's but they where old. We knew a guy that worked on them and had him do the work. Every thing goes back in like it comes out. He would stack it the way it came out then work on each individual part. Take lost of pic's and you should be ok. The tail bearing use to be a babit lead poor bearing which I had no way of doing this. Some have the brass bushing type bearing witch you can replace. Wish I knew more but that is the limit of what I do know. Nothing ventured nothin gained.

Thanks for taking the time to give advice.
I'm pretty sure that my CLUTCHES are fried. I did have the tranny out of the car a while back. I replaced the PUMP with a complete rebuilt one. I also had the tail end of the transmission off so I'm NOT worried about doing a complete rebuilt. I'm actually looking forward to it. Can't wait to have it apart and get to the bottom of what the real issue is.
From what I hear, these TF727 are suppose to be extremely sturdy transmissions. I think the fact that I was given two faulty T/C is what caused this problem.
I will be taking plenty of pictures when I do the work and hopefully make/share a slide show of the work.

Grate man. Sound's if you are determined to fix it. So good luck and will wait to see pic's and what you find. Russ.
