I currently have a electrical temp gauge using the factory sensor and wire, just intercepted from the harness to the gauge. Looking at getting a new set of gauges and noticed every one comes with a mechanical temp gauges and sensor.

Is it possible to cut the sensor wire and just splice on the factory sensor? I have never had a mechanical temp gauge so not sure how the built in sensor is wired. Not worried about the accuracy of the mech vs elec. but is it possible?

Anyone run into this?

Re: After market gauges - electrical vs mechanical temp gaug

A true "mechanical" temp gauge will have a capillary tube that goes to the engine block. No wiring, just this small tube wrapped in wire.

The part that goes in the engine is called a bulb. The tube and bulb is filled with a gas that expands when it gets hot. As it expands, the gas then drives the gauge mechanism up and down, showing the temperature.

The gauge won't work if the tube is kinked or broken.

Don't really want to plum in a new sensor, so think ill just go with individual gauges and a tri bracket.
