rebuilding correct dated alternator

Well, seeing how my wife might be laid off from her job, I started thinking about what I could do to start bringing in some extra cash for my family. Working on my Dad's alternator that I located the correct dated parts for, I figured why not start doing rebuilding of alternators and starters on the side. I have learned a ton about the differences between the square backs and round backs as well as the 2 year only ones for 1970 and 1971 round backs. Anyway, here are some pics of what I started with and what I have achieved so far.

I located another alternator that had the correct factory raised ring and dimple and pressed that out and put that into the correct dated alternator. I also had a friend who owed me some favors who had connections with someone who makes rubber stamps. Just waiting for the paint to dry on the pulley and then the front part of the alternator and internal stuff will be buttoned up. I also will be applying RPM to the housings so it wont oxidize and turn that white crusty appearance over time.

Thanks. still in the process of putting it back together. Not really rushing it as this is just filling time for me but probably could have had it done if I devoted some time to it instead of playing with my daughters.

Plenty of time for cars and cars parts, your daughters aren't always gonna be small enough to play with, they grow up and want to spend time with boyfriends. Cars and their rusty old parts will always be around waiting to be fixed.

True and the thing I can say about Dad's alternator is that it is for us so I can take my time with it. If it was a customers I was doing for them, it would have had a lot more progress.

How are you cleaning or refinishing the exterior?

Back in the sixties and seventies, my uncle make a nice living rebuilding Mopar alternators and starters for the New York State police.

I am using a chemical process that basically removes the oxidation / rust from the metal along with some super fine steel wool.

Thanks for the good wishes. I understand that there are other places that do this but some do not offer the stampings on the diodes and other places just sand blast the housings which ruin the original finish. I also understand that not everyone wants a concours restored alternator but are looking for a quality service that will last which is why I would be open to various forms of the restoration. Lets face it, not all of our cars out there are trailer queens or show boats. This will cater to no only the high end crowd but also the average Joe who wants to have a nice product on their car if they desire to pop the hood at a local cruise night or car show.
