Big block 4 speed = 833
What is the 4 speed number for a small block?

I have an interested seller for a 4 speed, but he has not verified that it is an 833, and he did not tell me what engine it is from.

They are all A-833s. The only difference is the tail shaft length. A & F-Bodies use the short tail shaft which is easily identifiable compared to the long tail shaft versions used by the B-Bodies. The A-Body versions also ONLY have a shifter mounting pad at the back of the tailhousing.

'64 & '65 versions have the ball & trunion output shaft. Run away quickly...
'76 saw the introduction of overdrive versions. Aluminum main case & tailhousing, and a gigantic front bearing retainer are the key identifiers here.

Just re-read my post and want to clarify a couple of things:

I should have written that the only difference EXTERNALLY was the tailhousing. Gearing on A/F vs. B/C/E is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. A/F have much lower first gears to compensate for usage behind leaning towers of power...

The gigantic front bearing retainer comes into play when you start looking at bellhousings. If you get an overdrive tranny you have to have the bellhousing with the same sized hole for the retainer. An overdrive bellhousing and a non-overdrive tranny means you have to install an adapter ring. Just things to watch out for...

Just to follow up with Acmes very good response is that the ball and trunion 4 speeds can be converter with a mainshaft and tailhousing. I did one 6-7 years ago with used parts bought off ebay and a free trans because it was so undesirable. I think I had $200 in the box rebuilt and ready to rock.
