The issue I have is too much play in the steering column when I pull the steering wheel towards my chest. My estimate is that I can pull the wheel approximately 1/8" towards my chest.
I'm not talking about the side-to-side play in the steering wheel due to the steering gear being out of adjustment.
All this is new to me. I have NOT performed any inspections yet. I just purchased a '1969 shop manual' and should have it available next week.
I plan on checking the steering linkage; front wheel bearings and also the steering box. Plan on getting my 'mechanic's helper' pull on the steering wheel while I check to see if anything is out of whack.
I'm curious to know if anyone has had a similar issue and if so, what was the culprit. My RR is manual steering with larger tires and an after-market smaller steering wheel- with a B&M floor shifter.

I just finished adjusting the steering box on my '58 Corvette. Removed the steering box from the pitman arm and took apart the 'drag link' in order to properly adjust the worm gear and adjusting shaft screw. I used a pull scale to get the proper tension through the center of travel in the steering box. Discovered that whoever worked on this 'drag link' last incorrectly put it back together and the draglink in the wrong direction.
Having finished working on '58 vette, I decided to look into the loose steering column on the RR. The steering seems OK from side-to-side travel but the column slop does NOT sound to safe to me. Maybe the bearings in the column need replacing. I have NEVER worked on a column and I'm completely in the dark on this one. Can't wait to get the shop manual and start inspecting what the issue is. That's the fun of owning these classics, "there's always something to keep us busy"......................LOL
Thanks in advance,
LG,
Mike
