20DE624C-D93A-4495-8E29-3E7587D63178.jpeg Had the single point part vacuum, part mechanical advance (guess Plymouth had their dual point optional). So before electronic ignition, dual point was the only way to go along with what looked like anyways a coil that put out a higher voltage than stock.

Now I always had trouble with misfire unless points and condenser were in perfect shape. I believe the single point would actually chatter and float per se. I had a similar Ford dual point distributor that fit and worked perfectly, problem solved......

Bought an ACCEL dual point, mechanical advance only distributor. Both point sets could be set with engine running using dwell meter (what’s that lol?). Think I set the advance with the 15 degree weight advance as I recall (bunch of selections with Allen screw) was the best selection. No exaggeration, I thought that car had a second carb. under the hood. I couldn’t believe the unleashed power; by then we were down to 280NHP on the 383CID.

Not the same as if going to electronic ignition at all. Dual point will not skip, points overlapped for greater spark buildup, super quick timing advance with just mechanical weights. No timing advance needed there for any improvements.

And the down side...... my word, where’s the gas going to. A few passes and tank would drop by 1/4. Could get 16MPG with stock distributor and along came the gas wars!

Similar to photo but those weren’t geared for road runners, had a tab and slot.

We put dual point distributor on our back street race car because of point sticking or not firing. The second set of point's stopped this problem. That is what the old guy at the junk yard advised us to do. Nothing worst than leave the line and the car spit sputter or would shut down through the run. :kartman: Don't put moth ball's in the gas tank either.

Electronic systems work great, but I’ll take a good dual point over electronic any day.

Yea and carry extra resistors as well as a CDI box. It don't hurt. :kartman: nothing worst than being broke down over a little part.

Just to ask where did you get the dual point distributor Rich. I see some on Classic industries. Also is it for the 383 or the a different motor. Russ. :steering:

Hi Russ, my word that was almost 50 years ago I bought the ACCEL dual point. It was great while it lasted and could afford the extra gas prices by mid ‘70’s. Photo is wrong as mine was a tab that fitted into a slot, other than that looked identical. Even I couldn’t screw things up too badly. Either it was in right or 180 degrees out. Bought it at a speed shop on Brighton Ave. in Portland, ME. Before electronic ignition.

Not so sure but the 383 and 440 may have used the same thing. Couldn’t tell motors apart from the outside with identical 4 barrel only of coarse, at least myself and friend with GTX couldn’t anyways.

Speaking of his GTX- had fuel leaking from gas cap behind license plate. Come to find out his vent line at front top of tank was plugged, those vented to atmosphere. Who knew that back in ‘69, not I...... was using torch to loosen rear shock bolts one day and kept smelling gas under there. Started looking and lo and behold, still here.

Have to mention I am road runnerless these days. My other car has a road runner engine, the legacy continues (13 Boss Mustang, sorry), still love roadrunners. Have the ‘68 bird on the hood on either side even.
