Steering box recommendations

OK all you experts out there. Looking to do something with my steering box. A little too sloppy for me and I don't like it. Any suggestions for a new or rebuilt manual steering box. I appreciate the help. Thanks!!

I saw new ones in Classic. Those prices are up their. Yes the worn out gears are not cheap. They have us at their mercy. You just can't go and pull one out of a junk yard any more. :(

After 50 year's those stat's have long since been gone. When Plymouth died those record's where probably trashed. I can't even fine the dealer ship where mine was sold from. There is a registry that some guy's are entering their cars on. But how many people are entering their car's on this. We may never know the exact number of the cars produced in the different color's. I would say just be proud you have the Petty Blue one. Their is one other one that has been on here recently bought and repainted. Too be restored. Good luck and that is a good color for the car. Thanks Russ ,I cant find a lot of info either ,my car cam from N. C. I live in Columbia S.C. and I purchased mine from the orig. owner .I found another one in my town in need of a restore but he wont sell. Cant blame him. Lol

The records for colors produced were gone long before Plymouth went away along with Dodge and Chrysler.

Have been consideringthis for some time too, my box is also too sloppy for my liking. Whats the fast ration 16:1 like? will it require an extra can of spinach before I jump in my Roadrunner?
It seems the quicker ratio would be harder to turn.

I liked the Electric steering that Oscar is putting in to his car. That is a good idea. But the power draw is a lot and I know about electric motor's and their reliability. Think I will wait and see how people like them and what if any problem's they have before doing that. We know power steering pull's hp from the motor also and if the belt brake's to it then it is like driving a Mack Truck. Those steering boxes in classic are rebuilt I think. Mine did not feel like it had slop in it but did not drive it but into the garage to start restoring it. :thumbsup2:

Quick ratio is harder to turn, physically, than standard ratio. The quicker the ratio the harder to turn. I recommend firm feel if you want to use the original box. Borgeson if that’s not important to you. I have a 20:1 in my car and it’s nice when you’re off idle and rolling above 5 mph, little input is required to get desired results. It is a handful when parking.

be aware of buying NOS mopar performance and other vendors selling quick ratio worm and sectors in the 1998-2010 range as I initially had one, made in 2007, and it blew up after 1000 miles of use if that and was a bit scary when it did. After talking with firm feel I learned that there were only really a couple of makers of quick ratio gears and around that time they were known to be faulty, all of them regardless of where you bought it. It was so bad that firm feel quit selling it as an upgrade for some time. They now offer it again as they have new ones being manufactured for them and they seems to be reliable now.

That is a scary story and costly. That is why I am sticking with the original standard box. Thanks for the story and info. Roadtrip.

I have the Borgeson Box 14:1 ratio and its is like a new car, too some weight off the from and made more room for the TTI headers.

couldn’t say what brand but the turns lock to lock will confirm if it’s 20:1 or not.

My 2018 Challenger has electric steering, which I like. My older Challenger had the hydraulic power Steering. I t was harder steering.

That is informative Alan. Did not no that the challenger had electric steering. They are moving ahead with many new devices now day's. Yes the old power steering also pulled HP from the motor. They where fine when they worked but when it went out it was almost impossible to steer the car.
