Stalls out at operating temp

I would love to get out and cruise for longer than 15min unfortunately as soon as engine gets up to operating temperature engine stalls out and won’t restart until it’s able to cool down. Any idea what might cause this? Replaced alternator, ballast resistor and ignition coil just last week for other semi-related issues (carb replacement was a necessary upgrade)

I thought about that or possibly a vacuum leak, will have to troubleshoot later this week. Maybe a 1/2 inch carb spacer could help.

What about the fuel pump is it new? Maybe the fuel pump rod. Just a few thought's. Hope you get it figured out nothing worst than not being able to enjoy the ride.

Doubt it would be a vacuum leak, sounds like a fuel problem. You changed the coil and ballast was my first thought, I would look at the fuel pump rod then vapor lock as said above.

You may have to get a heat shield, that’s what I had to do for my 440, especially if you get caught in traffic, that fuel tends to get a little heated that shield helps a lot

Thank you! Shield between the carb and the block? Separate from a carb spacer? Not sure I have a ton of room to work with between the filter, hood and air grabber. Was going to pick up some heat shields to wrap the fuel lines too. Wouldn’t have thought a carb upgrade would have resulted in this but I do have a single line fuel delivery vs. a return line so circulation most likely sucks. Will also check fuel pressure.

For what little it's worth, I tried that when I could hear fuel percolating after shut down. It didn't help. Temps where running from 200° on the highway to 230° in traffic, but never had it vapor lock. Changing the thermostat from a 190° to a 180° and adding a shroud put an end to all that.

It doesn’t take up any room it lays in the crevasse of the intake and bolt to it cause if your fuel lays on the intake it will get too hot

So when it dies do you have a spark?
I'm missing where you have confirmed that.
But you are talking about electrical stuff in the OP.
Basics.
Got spark?
OK.
Hit your accelerator pump when it "dies" and see if it squirts.
If it squirts then you got fuel.
Engine should do somthin' then.
At least "start".

Yes I do have a spark, engine will only run after it’s had a chance to cool down first

Their where guy's that pulled the heat shield off due to it was a pain in the butt when working on the motor. Or if they put a different carb on with a new riser plate to mount the carb. They also had problem's. Found out they needed the heat shield in the end.

No it is a piece of galvanized sheet metal or sometimes it is aluminum but it is formed to where it lays on top of your intake along side of carb and bolts to your intake it keeps your fuel lines directly off your intake

Let me run this by you just once. Had a pony motor on a well rig and had replaced every thing on the motor like not long ago. It would crank and run for a while. Then it was like someone shut the gas off. So I replaced fuel filter and lines. Cleaned the tank. It cranked and ran then did the same thing. Had recently replaced coil points condenser. So confused when to the parts store and replaced plug's plug wires condenser and coil. Put all the old parts on the deck while replacing with new. My son picked up the coil and said to me hey dad is this suppose to sound like this. I shook it and it rattled. I hell no. Here is the kicker it was made in Mexico. So it ended up being the coil. Cost me three down day. So now it hang's on the wall with a piece of tape on it with the price it cost me of 1500 dollars. The thing is it was new and not that old. So much for the story but lesson learned. Just because it is new it could be the problem. The coil would get hot then not work. Hope this will help. It pay's to spend a little more and get good part's.
