There's a good STICKY thread ("The Official Rear Main Seal replacement thread") over on ForBbodiesOnly.com (Forums > Classic Mopar Tech > Engine, Trans & Driveline) for anyone who hasn't done this job before.
I had not a clue, & very little experience overall. But after a lot of reading there &...
Russ, do you think the rope seal does a better job than the neoprene/rubber seals?
Did you only loosen the rear bearing cap, ...or ALL the caps?
Why would the rear seal be done so often during racing?
John, I calculate that to be a tire height of 27" front & 28" rear.
That's the *same* as I have using 235/60-15 front & 255/60-15 rear.
Yet, it appears that you do have much more rake than I have (see my car pic on first post here).
Can't just be that 1" difference in tire height front to rear.
I bought a “Sneaky Pete” tool for removing & installing rope seal around the crankshaft (don’t know if I have a rope seal in there now or not). But I thought that the rope seal had to be pounded into the groove all the way around in order to work (there are YouTube videos of guys using a tool...
Terry, have you replaced the rear seal yourself?
I’m getting ready to do this job myself on my ‘69 RR 383. Sounds like a job that is tricky to do right.
I’ve bought a rope seal & a VITON (“rubber style”) seal. I’m not sure which I might want to use. It sounds like the rope seals used to work...
Russ, I hear ya! I think perhaps most of us here are having those health issues that slow us down. After all, we drove these cars when we were teenagers! I've had to learn just to keep things slow. I can't make the quick progress that I could as a kid.
We used to drive these cars in all...
Thanks, Russ.
I saw that dealer search on M/T website... seems like local dealers don’t have the sizes we need.
But I see that if I find my tire on the M/T site & click on BUY, the M/T site gives not only their prices, but also a few other sources, including Summit & Jegs.
That looks great! Thanks for the photo.
I’d like to get just another inch or so between my rear rims & the fender lip.
I guess I would need longer spring shackles or recurved springs.
That looks great! I'm looking for that extra height in the rear. Looks like you've raised the suspension some as well? You've got more clearance from the top of your rear rims to the fender lip than what I have (see my pic on first post here). Are you running different springs or air shocks?
New RR owner here. Pretty new to MOPARs. My newly acquired '69 has very old tires that I want to replace. Goodyear Eagle GTII's... 235/60R-15 in front (26.1" tall) & 255/60R-15 rear (27.0" tall).
I like the look & the stance, but I'm considering putting 275/60R-15 on the rear to add an...
