Has anyone come across this dilemma?????

For whatever reason, the back seat of my RR came off the LH hook that holds it in place. This caused the back seat to ride higher than the back window tray which made the back seat visible from outside the car. It looked very ugly.

I decided to clean the seat and mount it properly. My research revealed that the back upright was hooked on the top and at the bottom at each end, it was fastened by bending a tab over the seat frame. I also came across information that the bottom was mounted by a bolt at each end of the frame. Well, my seat has the steel tabs but does NOT even come close to attach to the seat frame. My seat is fastened by one bolt at each end that goes through the seat frame. The bolt on the LH was loose and the bolt on the RH was laying on the floor.
Once I removed the bolt, I was able to raise the seat back and hook it on the fastener. The seat was now low enough and resting on the floor tunnel. Now one could NOT see the back of the seat from outside the vehicle. It looked correct and solved my issue. Problem is that I could NOT fasten the bottom part of the seat.

So, I thought. When I tried to install the bottom part of the seat. It raised the back seat once again, so the back of the seat was again visible from the outside. Another words, the back seat has to rest on the floor tunnel for it to fit correctly. It seems like the bottom seat is supposed to be placed UNDER the back seat. If I place the bottom seat under the back of the seat, it will lift the back part of the seat off of the hook that the seat hangs on. Not to mention the back of the seat will rise way too high above the rear window tray and expose the back of the seat.

The ONLY solution that comes to mind, besides modifying the seat somehow, is to maybe put a thicker window tray in place where it will cover up the rear of the seat being exposed.

Can anyone tell me what the tag attached to the underside of the seat frame indicates. ¿IS THIS SUPPOSE TO BE THE VIN NUMBER?
See attached picture: number stamped is 2858870
It is definitely NOT my VIN #..............

Any suggestions to the above is highly appreciated and I thank you in advance.

Mike

The way some cars were built you are lucky if the lower retainers are even there.
I don't think you are supposed to have to "bend" anything. I don't know if my driver's side isn't exactly in the correct place.
I got it to work though. I think the idea is you muscle it on and it "captures" the loop.
On my car I found the factory covers had been "overcovered" with new covers. i.e. two layers of seat covers.
AND the build sheet was still there. Score.
Anyway, I have always done my own seats. Some are more difficult than others. Takes a few tricks.
For reference, I also upgraded the spring support. The factory used wires and burlap. it was quick I guess. No way to duplicate that if i wanted to.
I've found who made the seat frames. It wasn't Chrysler.
My suggestion to the OP issue is make it work on the lower attach points anyway you can if everything else looks OK. That won't show.

These tabs are bent over once you have the back in place. At least mine where from the factory on my 68 and my 70
Roadrunner’s. I agree bent is not a pretty word on our cars but it’s the only way I know how to explain it. I think I said fold. Lol:poke:2916B257-4AD3-4BA6-AE75-68FEF2ABFB9D.png

Maybe a case of the sound deadoning and the seat covers not leaving enough room, once the tabs are bent over the slots the rear seat back should stay in place. It looks like one side of the bottom seat has vinyl along the back edge and the other side has fabric?

IDK, I was able to get the seat loops over the tabs with out changing the angle of the tab.
If the back seat has to come in and out a couple of time seem like would be better to try that first before bending the metal.
I had to take my seat back out once already because my trunk lock failed and I don't think anyone answered your question on that number.
I'm pretty sure it is just a part number from the manufacturer. I hinted before who that was.
For Saint Louis cars is was Douglas & Lomanson. I have a tag in my hand with their imprint.

I have the upper HOOKS and the lower tabs that get folded over the wire loop on the seat. The problem I have is the the lower tabs DO NOT COME close to reaching the loop in the seat. The way the seat gets attached on the bottom is not by bending the tab but there is a threaded bolt that secures the seat upright.
I also have the hooks for installing the bottom part of the seat.
The issue is that the bottom part of the seat, when properly installed, raises the back upright too high divulging the back of the seat from outside the car.

Someone mentioned the bottom seat may not be the correct seat. Maybe the HUMP in the middle needs to be deeper so the seat gets mounted lower and under the back part of the seat.
The other solution would be to shorten the back part of the seat. This way it could be fastened by using the tabs and the back would NOT stick up too high showing the back of the seat in the process.
I guess this will be my next project once I get the steering column issue resolved.

Thanks a bunch,
LG,
Mike
Is that the original back seat does not look like it has the original contour shape ?
I think you are correct. I've had this car ten years and it is the seat that came with it.
Seems like the seat back is too long. It rests on the driveshaft tunnel not leaving room for the seat bottom to fit under it. Not to mention the back does NOT come even close to the tabs that secure it.
The cut out that goes over the driveshaft tunnel should maybe be deeper so the seat bottom could be lower towards the floor.

The back of your seat needs the metal tabs on the wheel tub folded over this loop in the seat frame. View attachment 39233
Confirming that the wire loop you circled in the picture is the wire loop in the seat wire framing. If I recall, that loop on my seat is NOT visible protruding past the seat as your picture points out. Mine is hidden behind the seat and a long way from reaching the tabs on the car that go through the loop. My seat also has threaded bolt that attaches through the loop on the seat. It is very difficult to get to it because it also is hidden behind the seat but at a lower location than the tab.
Next time I work on the seat, I will have to take some pictures. To me it is looking like I may have the seat for something other than a 1969 Roadrunner.
Thanks again for the picture/help.

I can take you a few pictures that are a little more clearer if you would like. I can get you some measurements too if you need them.
