`70 road runner - finally getting to the restoration!

I put in re-located spring shackle reinforced mounts prior to buying the frame caps so I have had to grind them down a bit at the bottom of the original frame so the cap will fit over it. Even when touching the bottom of the original frame the cap is 5/8" lower than the original frame at the very rear. I'll adjust for it on the new rear crossmember. I would never do caps over the frame rails I would just cut out the bad sections and weld in new sections. I wasn`t even aware AMD sold caps?
 
I originally patched the rear frame rails but they still had rusted sections. I was going to have to replace the rear crossmember which was not very well fastened to the frame rails because of the rust. The new frame rail caps worked great allthough the very back was about 5/8" lower. I cut away a small section like 3/4" which allows the rear crossmember to seat at the bottom of the original frme rail. I got the caps from Classic and I think they just got them from AMD. I had another problem as I relocated the rear shackles and put in the reinforcing mount that fit over the frame, so I had to grind it down a bit so the cap fit over it. I have just fastened the caps with self tapping screws but I am going to plug weld them when I weld the rear crossmember in I fasten them all with self tapping screws first and then I will plug weld them after I am sure that it all lines up and fits. It looks really clean now that the original totally rusted frame rails are covered up. It is a lot stronger also.
