This is a road test Car Life did in Jan. 1969. From the tone of the article they aren't too keen on the road runner and from my experience they weren't too good at tuning the car correctly. With the setup they were running they should have been another .5 second faster IMO.
At any rate its a decent read.

That is the one!

What a bunch of boobs. :haha:

I never saw a bigger bunch of GM homers and hack job writers.

105 mph is good enough for damn near 12's :drive: IF you know what you are doing.

They even reference that hachet job they wrote up on the 68 RR :blah:

Well, a 4 speed will always mph better than it will et and an automatic will always et better than it will mph. That being said though, I agree that these guys weren't "with it" when it came to tuning for max. performance. Heck, when I broke my car at the strip some years ago(at the top of 4th gear about 50 ft. from the traps) I still went 14.08 @ 102.98 mph!

I don't understand, the 4 speed RR with headers and new manifold was slower than a stock SB in the six car test?

Like I said - those Car Life guys weren't real knowledgable when it came to tuning for performance.

Man, 14.70s for the modified car? That sounds more like a stock car to me than the 15.37 @ 91.

Yeah - I was doing 14.20's with my road runner right after I got it back in 2000. It had a 280/290 cam with .480 lift, an Edelbrock TM6 intake, Holley 650, stock manifolds, 2-1/4" exhaust w/Meineke mufflers and 3.55 gears on street radials (225-70R/14). They did 14.1 with open headers, Edelbrock DP-4B intake (which was a good one BTW), Holley 750 and Purple Shaft (280/280 with .474" lift) cam? :loco: :loco: :loco:

Back in '69 my 383 rr 3.91 sg Torqueflite would do 14-teens all day and all night long at Keystone DW. best was a 14.07 @ just over 101 mph. Most other 383 rr's would do the same or in the 14.20's and low 14.30's pretty much stock and on stock size or maybe G or H 70 street tires. High 13's with headers through mufflers and narrow slicks were not out of the question. Sheeeeesh high 14's  maybe they had too much carpet under the throttle pedal.............. :jester:

Yeah - or maybe they were just boneheads who couldn't tune or drive their way out of a wet paper bag! :loco:
