back up lights

I'm trying to fix my back up lights. The lights work when I put power to them, but I can't get to light when car is running. Any hints

test it at the transmission switch

I went through this, the way it is wired is through the starter relay to the neutral safety switch on the trans then from there back to the lights, The power when key on goes through the NSS and to the lights, the power source is a tap from the radio tap in the dash. The 2 outer pins on the NSS are for the back up lights.
