wife said get rid of it so last night took it to a cruise and on the way home she crapped out....today i started it and ran fine.....got her heated up and after a while she started to stumble......then stumbled and died.......went to re- start......and stumbled and didnt start......spark seems to be weak at coil and resister on firewall is too hot to touch.......looked at coil while running and dont seem to jump spark......it seems something is getting hot .....maybe coil failing??......what do you think?.......have plenty of gas sqirting in carb..and no pressure releasing when i remove gas cap....seems electrical

Yep, sounds like it is electrical to me, Start checking from the Altenator back. it might be going south. especially if the regulator is getting hot. I have never heard of a coil just crapping out like that. Points or full electric distributor? I would say check the points and condensors.

A coil going bad gets worse with heat :yesnod:
THATS WHAT I WAS THINKING TOO ....bobbie
it has points and condensor and the regulator is ice cold...the ceramic resistor is real hot to touch

A shorted coil sounds like a possibility....will cause lots of heat at the resistor and coil, and get worse the longer the car runs. Check charging voltage when you can get it running... across the battery terminals. Should be 13.5-14.5v.

okay back to square one.......bought a new coil and swapped it out.....started right up better then before......was going for a ride and crapped out 400 feet up the driveway......when i bought the coil from nappa the parts guy said back then they used to sell ceramic resistor like they were going out of style.....everyone would carry a spare in there gloveboxes......so thats my thoughts.....the resistor was real hot this time again......so i going for a new one tomorrow

i was having a problem......the amp meter would peg out and then go back to normal.......change out the voltage regulator and back to normal......all fixed with that problem.......just have to fix this possible resistor problem now

You may have smoked the resister with the regulator, not uncommon

I have an extra resister in all 3 of my cars. haven't needed one yet but you never know when one will go bad.

Funky running problems are one of two things in an old Mopar. Points/condensor or ballast resistor. Its just like a rule we use in Paramedicine. 80 years old + irregular heart beat = Atrial fibrillation.

I was thinking Ballest resitor on the fire wall, but it is not common for me to check the easiest things first. That is why I suggested check the Alternator, points and cond., and then regulator and ballest. At least the resitors are fairly cheap.

I FILED THE POINTS AND SET THEM TO 20 WHAT THE BOOK SAYS.......STILL NO START AND A WEAK SPARK AT COIL

NEW COIL/BALLAST RESISTOR.....AND WILL HAVE NEW POINTS AND CONDENSOR TODAY.......IF IT DONT START.......I DONT GET IT

Hey George, try this....only for a few seconds...get a jumper wire and run it from the battery positive to coil positive and try to start it. If it runs, then there is a problem with power side of the circuit, i.e. ballast, ignition switch, wiring, etc.... If it still doesn't run, then there is a problem with the ground side of the circuit, i.e. points, condenser, distributor, wire between coil neg and the points, etc. If you connect the jumper wire and it (the wire) gets hot, or melts, or sparks fly, then there is a dead short in the coil somewhere... just a thought... Basically, the points are turning the coil on ond off through the ground side of the circuit. It is known as a "switch to ground" circuit. So breifly grounding the negative side of the coil with the pos side powered up should cause a good strong spark at the coil wire. Good luck with it!
