Dog dish question for Sponge Bob

When you painted the gray areas on your hubcaps, how did you go about it? Did you just paint the whole rectangular area then wipe the paint of the high area of the vertical strips before it dried? Or use a small brush, or mask off all the vertical strips, (which would be insane).

paint all the letters an fins with a little brush. Just kidding. Spray all the letters and fins then after the paint sets up a little very lightly wipe over the areas with lacquer thinner. I had to repaint one to get the feel of wiping them off.
