Hey guys haven't checked in for a while hope all is well. Took the car had a ball. Got on the highway and had grandmas passing me as my tach read 4000. I think I want to gear it down. I have a 440 4speed with a d 60 rear end. Any suggestions on how to gear it. I was thinking changing to 3:54's.
Thanks

I like the 3.54s in mine and I believe that's the highest gear you can get for a 60

I think they came with 4:10 gears as well didn't they Bob ?
Oh you can go much lower than that but he wants to keep up with the soccer moms on the hwy. I put 4.88s in my old runner, it was great in the quarter mile.

3.54's are a nice all-around gear. I have 3.55's w/a Sure Grip in my 8-3/4 and love that setup.

Yea my runner has 3:91's in it and the challenger has a 3:23 sure grip so it will be a little nicer on the highway. :yesnod:

Gear ratio terminology confuses everyone now and again...

Higher gear = lower numerical ratio. Think transmissions. Highest gear is usually one to one or overdriven.

Lower gear = higher numerical ratio. Using my transmission analogy, a 3.27 first gear is lower than a 2.97 first gear.

I like the tranny analogy as it is easy for anyone to understand - and no one with any gumption will ever argue with you that first gear is higher than fifth gear. When I'm looking at chunks or diffs at a swap meet I always try to make sure I say "low or high gear ratio" when asking what they have otherwise you end up arguing mathematics with someone that didn't finish the fourth grade... :basketcase:

That wasn't for you, smarty-pants... I figured it might be helpful for some other members on here that weren't working on trannys and diffs when Teddy Roosevelt was charging up San Juan Hill... :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
