Finally got a chance to work the bugs out of my carb on the Roadrunner I bought. Car is very nice and original but at some point, a Holley Street Avenger 670 was installed. No offense to anyone out there, but I hate these carbs. A correct carb will go on this winter. The car had all the typical problems with an out of the box Avenger. Flat spots, surging at idle, did not pull very well, exhaust burned eyes at idle, stumble when going around corners etc.

I have played w/ these enough to know the issues with them. Took the carb apart Sat morning and made some changes, which are as follows:

*Float level set correctly. Was way low on primary and sec.

*PV changed.

*Squirter size increased. Don't know where Holley is having these made now (China?) but there is no way the squirter marked #31 was a #31. I have a box of these and looked at them under magnification and again, it's marked wrong.

*Jetted up from 65 to 70 on primary.

*Changed secondary spring from black to yellow.

*Adjusted secondary idle speed on carb. This helps so primary is not too high and past transition.

*Re-set timing.

*Re-set idle mixture after all this.

My son and I took car for a drive. No flat spots, surging, burning eyes (from lean missfire) no stumbles etc. Car ran great and pulls very hard for a 3.23 geared 383. In fact I want to say it feels quicker than a much larger displacement stock Musclecar from another make I had years ago.

Sorry no burnout, but we did a blast up to 75 MPH. Will try and get a burnout next time. Just wanted to see how it ran w/ the changes.

The rest of us "project car people"
can live vicariously through your video! One would quickly assume that this is not your first day at carbs! Thanks!

Took out Road Runner again this morning. 1st one was a rolling burnout. I just left it in drive nailed it short shifted in to 2nd a little early. I don't want to beat it too bad, the valve springs are 40+ years old.

2nd one I manually shifted and twisted it a little higher but still short shifted into 2nd. I really don't want to eat a valve in a numbers matching car.

Car responds pretty nice for a 3.23 geared car once I got the jetting/timing dialed in.

The video is fun to do!keep the rpm down [5k rpm]untell you get some springs. Thanks for sharing!

Oh trust me I know. I spin my other car to 7,200 or so and the maintenance (checking springs, lash etc.) is a PITA. One of the reasons I wanted a "stock" car.

sounds good & looks nice too, congrats on getting your tuning issues solved... I happen to be a Holley guy myself, but like the Carter AFB & AVS or Thermoquads too, IMHFO everything no matter the make should be properly tuned.... Speaking of no matter the make, I've had nothing but bad luck with the Edelbrock/Weber Carter AFB copies, along with multitudes of others, just look anywhere on the W-W-W... I'll take a Carter over an Edelbrock any-day, they make some great parts, I love their heads, I even have a set of wheels & headers from them too, on different cars, but I'm no fan of the carbs, if I was forced to choose, I'd take the Holley over the Eddy copy... sorry not trying to ruffle any feathers, I know allot of people love them, I ain't one of them...LOL... cool car Tempest 455

Update. Found the correct 383 carb for the Road Runner. Fed Ex came on a Sat and it was not 15 min and I took off the Holley and had the Carter on. Driveway burnouts are fun. My wife was sitting on the porch when my son took this so did not want to piss her off too bad!

Look close and you will see my mailbox post is a crankshaft!
