Very cool! I just bought a .44 too! Only mine is a cap and ball replica of an 1851 Navy Colt.

Gun dealer at work sold it to me. I filled out some forms. Not much really.

But you are in a Nazi area so who knows. I don't even need a concealed permit for one in the glove box here in hillbilly heaven.

That one won't fit however.

Hoe do you all like a ported barrel. I was told that they suck by a gun shop owner. I'm glad I didn't listen. This gun is much more smooth shooting than other guns like say a 357 Ruger is.

A ported barrel on a large caliber is a good thing - cuts down felt recoil.
As far as purchasing a handgun, here in PA, I complete the forms for background check, they run it, I come back clean, I pay for the gun and walk out of the store. Pretty simple.
For a concealed carry permit, I had to go to downtown Pittsburgh, and apply at the Allegheny Co. Sherrif's office. You do the paperwork, they run a check and contact to in a couple days. You go back down, they take your pic, you pay $25 I think, and presto - CCpermit - good for five years.

One day class plus range time, good for four years and a phone call to renew. No background check to buy guns with a CCW its all been done.

New York State is a real ordeal to get your permit. First, you apply and submitt 4 references, you are finger printed and photographed and then you wait for a judge to approve it. If your background checks OK, then chances are they will issue a "sportsman" permit. That lets you hunt and target shoot with it, but you can't carry it. You can then petition the court for a CCW, but you better have a good enough reason to have one. That permit is good anywhere in the state except New York City.

Mrs. Big John has just started the process and we figure maybe by spring she'll have her permit.

NY State is pretty crazy about handguns... To even handle a handgun, you have to have a valid permit.

Myself, I have had a New York CCW since 1990. I can carry concealed anywhere its legal. I aso have a non-resident Pennsylvania CCW that was very easy to get.
