Clutches. Its pretty easy to replace the clutches. The other worked well but most consider them disposable, but they can be machined to work after they get loose.
They both have springs. One has a series of clutches and steel plates, the other (cone) is a tapered metal puck backed by springs and the friction between the metal puck and the housing cause both wheels to spin. Like HemiBeep said the cone can be rebuilt by machining it but the clutch type is really the better one. I personally dont mind the cone type but it can be really noisy.
