The easiest way is to pull the spark plug from #1 cylinder. Put your thumb over the hole and have someone "bump" the starter until air starts to escape. Then, looking at the harmonic balancer, keep bumping the starter until the timing marks align. Look at where the distributor rotor is pointing. That would be #1.
