Steering slop?

Id like to adjust out (if possible) the slop in my steering. From a quick look its not in the steering linkage/suspension but rather the Steering Box itself (Manual). While under the hood i can grab the steering shaft before it enters the box and easilty turn it ~45 Degrees total back and forth (same as if it was driving). Id guess because of this there is slop/wear inside the box. I have looked in the service manual and nothing seems to point to this. Anyone had a similar issue, and what did you do to resolve?

That slotted, theaded rod with the lock nut on it sticking up out of the top of the box is the adjuster. Been a million years since I fiddled with one; anyone remember which way to adjust that thing?

You tighten the slotted piece down. Bad thing is every one that I have ever done is only wore in the middle so it's tight on the ends after adjusting. But, you never know.

I've done it in one of my trucks and it was a lot better, but never like new.

Take a look at pages 19-2 and 19-3 in your FSM. You might find you'll want to just replace it or have it rebuilt, but you've got nothing to lose adjusting it first.

I tired to tighten it but could only get 1/2 turn out of it and that didnt seem to make any difference. I dont know how long that "screw" is to start, but there wasnt much more then the hight of the nut sticking out to start. Who knows with a bigger screwdriver, and more time i might be able to get it turned in more, but id didnt seem like that 1/2 turn did anything so i didnt want to go crazy.

Does anyone sell rebuilt boxes,or rebuild kits? Whats something like that run cost wise?

Here's one more option for you.

http://www.steerandgear.com/

I have personal experience with them - they were great to deal with. I have one of their "Firm" PS boxes on the Swinger.

You'll notice that they work on everything, but feature MoPars on their website and have a section for Chryslers...and a section for all other cars and light trucks... That should tell you what you want to know...

Thanks for the sources. That being said has anyone been able to successfuly reduce/eliminate the slop in their steering, am I just missing something?

From my own experience with the truck box (similar, but not the same box) and other's experiences, I think you may improve it, but not get rid of the slop. The gear just wears and as Acme said, not evenly.

One of the knocks on the Chrysler manual steering box from back when they were new was the fact that they had slop in them. The recirculating ball mechanism just isn't as precise as a rack and pinion setup. My 1st runner was equipped with manual steering and it was "sloppy". It was my daily driver and after awhile I just got used to it.
