I own a '69 roadrunner I recently noticed I had an issue with my horn. When making a left turn with my signal on my horn would beep. I removed the wheel and installed an isolator that I made from gasket material to sandwich the horn ground piece located above the turn signal switch. It was at this point I noticed the steering wheel could be pulled up approximately one inch toward the driver and pushed back down toward the steering box. I also notice when the steering wheel was pulled up that one inch that the horn was no longer beeping with the left turn signal in operation. My question(s) for you is why and how I gained an inch travel of my steering shaft. Thanks!

  • Missing or Damaged Retaining Clip/Snap Ring: The most common cause is a missing or dislodged snap ring or clip that holds the upper steering column bearing in place.
  • Worn or Damaged Upper Bearing: The bearing itself might be worn out, allowing for excess movement.
  • Sheared Plastic Rivets: The 'Cuda steering column is designed with a safety feature that uses plastic rivets to hold the shaft at a fixed length. If these rivets are sheared, the column can telescope in and out.
My bet is on the column was collapsed at some point.
