Ive got to get a replacement rear bumper asap so that I can have quarters put on correctly, mu bumper is twisted and sits uneven, and I cant weld up my quarters with out it sitting place. So what kind of reviews are out there on the AMD bumpers, Ive heard they are quick to rust, but Im out of choices....

I would contact these guys: http://www.tricityplating.com/

A good bumper shop will straighten your bumper and rechrome it. I've had bumpers that were pretty wadded up and then straightened and rechromed by a local shop. They came out great. Obviously, the better the core, the better the end result, but your's doesn't sound that bad. Problem is there isn't a lot of bumper shops anymore.

Tri City was recommended to me by a friend that has had a lot of work done there.

Again... Chinese new versus rebuilt original.

I had a bumper chromed by Tri City for my 75. Had to send it back because it was full of sanding scratches. They did make it good, I just lost an entire season of driving because it was without a bumper for months. Make sure you can inspect any bumper in person before you buy.

I got both my bumpers thru Jeff at 521 Restorations (AMD) in 2012. They bolted right on and look great. No sign of any rust anywhere.

AZ Desert,
I put them on my Valiant, they fit well and I would say the finish is about what the factory did, its nice but not show chrome. No complaints here

Tri City did the bumpers on Mrs. ACME's Swinger. That was about 15 years ago. They straightened them and welded up some holes in the rear bumper where someone had added on a hitch. They still look like they were just done yesterday. I too was turned on to them by a friend - a friend with one of the nicest '57 Chevys in the country. He won't use anyone else. They will be doing the bumpers on Bambi when the time comes.

At the other end of the spectrum are the Chrome Wizard and the Bumper Boyz. I had the Chrome Wizard do the bumpers on my '74 Duster and the fender extensions on the Swinger. "Nightmare" does not even come close to describing THAT experience - at one point I thought that I would have to take him to small claims court, and was convinced that I would never see my parts again. I bought a set of re-chromed bumpers for my '67 Malibu from the Bumper Boyz at the Daytona Turkey Rod Run several years ago. They started rusting before I even got them on the car. Worst metal prep I have ever seen for this type of work. I would never use either of them EVER again.

I had the original bumpers re-chromed locally. The workmanship looks good from a distance (40 feet) with tons of pits and scratches throughout the chrome, plus when polishing it the polishing cloth left more scratches, so I opted to take a chance with AMD. The two (front and rear) bumpers arrived today. After a thorough inspection, I decided to return the front bumper (back to Summit) for an exchange, and keep the rear. I called Summit first and they were great about the whole process. I dropped off the faulty bumper at UPS and the replacement was sent out today, so I am hoping the replacement will look as good as the rear bumper. They aren't super show quality, but are much nicer than the stock bumpers were and they seem to be sturdy and are fairly heavy... at least as heavy as the stock bumpers are. If you are ok with going through the process of returning the product until you eventually get what you want, them AMD is just fine. I agree that coating the backside would be advisable. I intend to apply a coat of epoxy paint to the backside of both front and rear.

In the 2.5 years since this post originated, I had Tri-City re-plate mine. The rear was pretty bent and they managed to get it back to perfectly straight. These guys are awesome.

Yes, Dave, I know. I need to quit using the inoperative A-Bodies as storage shelves...

Does Tru City still engrave your last name on the inside of the bumper ?, and hate to admit, I live 20 minutes from them and haven't been there in 15 years

My new front bumper arrived today (AMD through Summit) and, much to my surprise, it looks amazing... more like an expensive high-end re-chromed bumper. I just can't believe these bumpers came from AMD!!! I spent an hour inspecting every inch, front and backside... absolutely no issues whatsoever!!! The rear is not quite as perfect as the front, but it's so close it too looks more like an expensive re-chrome job. All my car friends and members of the car club I belong to will just assume I dropped a bunch of money and had them re-chromed. I also cleaned the protective goop off the backside of both the front and rear and have determined neither will require any coating. As a matter of fact the backside on both look pretty really good and should polish up nicely. I also just purchased a gallon of a product specifically used for polishing and sealing. It can be used on everything from paint to chrome and all surfaces in between. I saw a live demo of the product at a Good Guys event last year and have since talked with about a dozen car enthusiasts that swear by the stuff. Two have used it on AMD chrome products and the results are unbelievable. I anybody is interested, the product is "Chemical Guys Extreme Top Coat and Sealant". the stuff actually works, and I am always extremely skeptical of all new or untested products and typically only buy and use well-known and tested products. All I can say is my new AMD bumpers look absolutely amazing!! Who knew??
