Valve train noise

All, I recently installed a new Mopar cam and the correct mopar part number of valve springs along with new lifters. Basically I had a cam, in my opinion, had too much duration at 306 degrees. I went with a brand new mopar cam with the same lift and duration as the stock 383 HP cam that would have come in this engine back in ‘69. I degreed the cam and did everything by the book when installing. I also performed the break-in as directed using the proper break-in lube etc. changed the oil and filter after break-in. So we’re past break-in I hope. At startup now it runs smooth, no noise etc. After driving perhaps 30 min or so, returning to my garage I can hear a very slight valve-train noise but it only occurs after the engine warms. After it cools and I run it again, same scenario. Any thoughts on this? Adjustments, etc? I’m using 10W40 with a zinc additive as directed. Again, brand new cam, lifters and the right springs. Around 18 degrees of timing set according to vacuum and proper carb adjustment. She would pop through the carb at 5 degrees as directed by mopar. 18 seems to be where the engine runs best. I know these details have zero impact on the noise just adding detail here. Thank you all!!

Did you set the valve lash when the motor was hot or cold. That can make a difference sometimes. :kartman:

So I’m having a time finding details on setting the proper valve lash. Is it possible with the stock rockers/shafts since the rockets are not adjustable? I think I may have excessive lash but not sure. Maybe it’s too tight? When assembling the engine I tightened the bolts to 25 ft. Lbs. per the original service manual from Chrysler. Does anyone have a proper procedure for the stock equipment to include clearances? Is it as simple as using the shaft bolts for the adjustment? Surely not... anyway nothing noted in my 1000 plus page service manual from ‘69!?!? Thank you all! Mopar or no car!

There is no adjustment. I have read that some of the new lifters are a little noisy. How is the oil pressure at hot idle.

Oil pressure at hot idle is around 20. That concerns me as well. Cold idle is at 60 or so. Also I’m using an aftermarket auto meter gauge. What’s your experience here? I suppose it’s just a standard pump, not high pressure etc.

Oil pressure sounds good. There is no adjustment on stock rockers. Slight valve train noise also is pretty normal. Lifters I am assuming are hydraulic, and unless there is a problem with a lifter not pumping up when warm, a pushrod not quite the right length this may be something you just have to live with

Thank you all for the great advice here. Yeah I agree could be normal it’s just puzzling that it occurs after it’s warm. Makes me feel like not enough oil getting to the top when warm. I’m running 10W40 and a zinc additive. It’s a mopar cam with matching hydraulic lifters and mopar springs, all new. I haven’t driven the car much since installed. Under 50 miles. Perhaps it’s just not fully past the break-in? I’m good if this is normal just curious about if anyone has experienced similar symptoms after the engine warms. Also should I run a different weight oil?

Did you soak your lifter a couple of days before installing them and did you use a lot of white lithium grease may help one lifter may be sticking just a thought not an expert

I prefer 20W50 like Valvoline VR1 with Zinc. In my experience, it helps keep things lubed better and increases oil pressure at higher temps.

Really no need to soak a lifter if the engine is primed properly. And the pressure sounds good. As things warm up clearances change also.

Sorry to say thought the valve lash was settable. Know some motor's don't have it but was thinking this old of a motor had it. Happy driving 69-sunfire-RR.

As oil warms up it gets thinner and that could be allowing the lifter to lose a little resistance to the pushrod

Thank you, yeah I thought there was virtually no adjustment with the stock rockers. I’m thinking of going with some adjustable 1.6 rockers? Any of you all done this before? I’m looking to get a little more lift out of the new cam and then the adjustment would be nice.
