Had a long discussion this evening with a long time Mopar guy that was beating me up over cloning the silver car into a A12 car. He thinks it is an injustice to the Satellite, and that I am just trying to raise the value of the car. I think there is a place for clones as long as you don't alter the numbers. I want the car to look so much like an A12 that people will only be able to tell what it is by looking at the vin. I want to make a nice driver quality car that I can take out and beat on, and not worry about tearing up a a piece of history. I am not trying to fool anyone, I just want to make a cool driver that will never be on the trailer (unless I beat on it a little to hard). What do you guys think?

It's your car, do what makes you happy. :)

Personally, I would make it one bad-ask Satellite, like Mike's on here!!

You could also make it a hybrid; part Satellite, part A-12. Throw on a lift-off hood and give it some grunt!

Droptop,

One thing I've found that if one takes a car and makes it appear as if it were another, even when you're not trying to fool anyone, people may naturally think that is the case, as well as that you're trying to make it something its not. Satellites are cool! I think the Mopar guy is right that it would be an injustice to the Satellite. Satellite stands on their own!

Clone it if you want to. Satellites may be cool but A12 cars are insanely cool. The guy was a purist, and that's his right, but you yourself are a Mopar guy, if you don't mind a cloned car, then you have to assume most would feel the same as you. If it were me, I've always wanted to clone a '71 I say go for it.

I say go for it ! When I was a kid the family car was a 69 Satellite , which I learned how to drive with and was passed down to me as my first car . A couple of good buddies of mine and I did what ever we could afford to soup it up , we called her the SatelRunner . Had a hell of a lot of fun in that car , those were great years . So I say yes , do what makes you happy .

Harold,

I look at it this way when the other person that's doing all the complaining does all the following:

Buys the car/truck

pays for all the neeeded work and parts to make it what he wants then and only then will I make it what he wants.

Until then when it's my hard earned money I shall do what I want and make the car the way I would have bought it.

its what I drive. for the people in the know the numbers are right there. for the others if they ask I tell the truth. the bad rap for a "clone" or "look alike" all comes from people trying to pull a fast one for financial gain in my opinion.

I have my 68 Satellite and have had it for over 30yrs, and came within a gnats a$$ of cloneing it into a GTX. But I bought my Road Runner and figured it would be cheaper to leave the Satellite as is. I vote clone it.

Harlod...
who's car is it?
who's $$ is going into it?
who are you trying to make happy with it?
as long as the vin stays put, why not?
I sure could never afford an A12. That's one of the reasons mine has an A12 style hood.

I have mixed feelings about clones. First, it is your car.... do as you wish. That's the big one right there. It makes a car more affordable and you are more likely to drive it too. That's all good.

The bad... I owned an A12 car for 34 years. There was a clone that looked like my car, even the same Q5 color that used to show up at various shows and cruises. Nothing would tighten my jaw up more than someone saying "There's another JUST LIKE YOURS over there". So... You may expect the guy with the real A12 (or whatever) to give you a little attitude.

But... back to your car. I think most people are accepting of clones as long as they are done right and not being passed off as an original car. A nice car is a nice car, no matter what.

Clones are a great way for someone to have the opportunity to own something they may not be able to afford. As long as the seller doesn't miss represent the car. Let's face it they make are cars worth more money. image.jpg

Yea... That's right. A friend bought a Sport Satellite many years ago. He said something about changing it to a GTX. It would have been a good candidate too. It was a 383 car with A/C and a lot of the toys. I looked at the car and told him that I'd seen a lot of GTXs but very few big block Sport Satellites. That was just what he wanted to hear. He still has the car, although I haven't seen it in a few years... and it's still a Sport Satellite.

Big covered it nicely.

At the end of the day it's your car. Tell him to go pound sand, Harold.

I agree with everyone has said so far. I think most of you guys know that that I prefer my cars to be the real thing. When I went to look at my Road Runner for the first time that was the first thing I checked, making sure it was an RM car and not something else. Knowing how much the real McCoys can cost I've come to understand why someone would make a clone. As long as they do as you said Harold , that they are not not trying to call it something it's not, then I have no problem with it. In fact there is an A12 clone around here that was done so well that you wouldn't know the difference. But if they try calling it the real thing, then I have a big problem with that and would want nothing to do with it. And I wouldn't have much good to say about the guy trying to pass it off.

For my money, I never give a thought to what others might think. I do what I want and I do it honestly. It's your car, money, time, and future, so do what makes you happy and don't regret it.

What Mac said is correct, the bad rap on clones comes from people trying to rip off others by presenting their cars for sale as original, authentic vehicles. To me that's about as bad as it comes and that's why it's important to be honest with othes about what you have. Just my .02 worth....
