My plan is to rebuild a 383 to drop into the Scamp using the Schumacher motor mount kit. But, in the mean time, while I save some $$$, my cousin gave me an Offenhauser 4bbl intake for the Slant 6 that's in the car now. I am considering buy the Holley 390 cfm 4bbl carb and linkage kit and slapping this baby on.
1. Will there be a noticable improvement?
2. I need to get this intake cleaned first. A local shop wants $30 to glass bead blast it, is that a fair price?

I'm not sure how measurable the improvement will be without dealing with other factors, but I'm sure someone will chime in. :popcorn:
Thirty bucks isn't bad. It's a no money job for the shop. So if that's what it takes for him to turn his machine on, I'd pay it. :cents:

I did that to my jeep years back when it had a 6 in it. About the only thing it did was make it hard to start when cold and killed the gas mileage. :yesnod:

A loss on the bottom and that's what a 6 is all about and a little gain on the top end but you would need a cam and headers to notice much change. Save the money for the 383 I ended up throwing my intake away there was no market at least at the time. Oh I did find a Holley 2bbl worked all around better than the 4bbl on the intake.

What 69hemibeep said is right on the spot.

I got a cam in my /6 wagon and a 2bbl carb with 21/4 exhaust all the way back .

I have the 4bbl and manifold but,with the cam I have in the engine and no headders it will not really be noticed.

The way it runs and prefoms I'm going to leave it as is.

Thanks guys! I was only considering this because the intake was free. The car actually runs pretty good.
I will have to post some pics at some point.

Good point Bob, but I have to admit that I dont understand why the helper spring wont work.

If the car is jacked up and supported at the front portion of the rear frame rails, and the springs are now arched since the wheels are off the ground, and you install / bolt on the spring helpers, How will it not help maintain the arch once the rear is lowered back down? At least in the portion which the helper spring was bolted down on can not return to it's original "flatness".

I hate to admit to it but as a kid with little money I tried most of the crap out there from emergency adjustable fan belts, muffler bandage, Long shackles, helper springs, maybe there improved, trans stop leak. I don't think your going to run a helper spring with the 383 in the car? The springs won't work right for traction or ride.

If Bob has the new vise and it's a big enough one have him re-arch the springs and that will help ya out :thumbsup: :lmao: :lmao:

ooooooh, ok. Now I see where the issue is..... Bob, when you were a kid, you were working on the Flat Head Six. Ok, after that something called the Slant 6 came out, that's what I'm working on.... :lol:

hi, go with a 4bbl. don't waste time or money on a 2bbl. the people selling the 2bbl stuff think its gold plated. it makes it fun to beat up on the 383 guys. its a little harder with the 440 guys, but not much. this is a holley 600 i took off a 440. i thought it would be too big and too rich ,but it was on my shelf. i started with #60 jets in pri and secondary with tall yellow vac spring. it runs very good. first pic shows unsilenced air cleaner assy installed. a hot slant has a sound of its own. use what you have. ron
