68 RR authenticity

so I bought this 68 RE to restore but have decided to go a different direction. Problem is I’ve gotten grief from a couple of tire kickers about having proof that it’s a Roadrunner and not a clone. There seems to be some conflicting information about body stamping on 68 and older cars. Some say it should match the VIN, others say it’s a order number. Unfortunately, my core support has been changed and no fender tag. I’ve attached a pic of the VIN and the body stamp on the trunk rim. How can I prove it’s legit?

Well a 68 roadrunner has round side marker lights/ turn signals and has black and white running birds on the doors and tail lights have more chrome than a 69 as far as the doors on your car they may be from a charger may be wrong

So without a fender tag or build sheet, all I have to prove it’s not a satellite or Belvedere is the vin on the dash?

You have the most important ID the VIN, Lots of runners out there without tags. If you don't have #s matching drive train broadcast sheet or fender tag it all hurts the value but the VIN says its a bird

I know it’s a bird, I guess the tire kickers that called are scared of it being something else with a swapped out dash. I don’t think I have it priced like a numbers car but people want to buy gold for peanuts...I just wish there was some other way to prove the car is a RR.

I noticed it has a 1969 Hood. This could be some of the reason for the concern perhaps.

I think you're good, but I'm pretty far from being some kind of expert on the matter. Matching number cars are not necessarily "rare" but there are more non-matching ones than matching. Many if not most have replaced body panels, hoods, and trunk lids, floors and just about anything and everything else. My personal opinion is it hurts the car, esthetically speaking, not having a correct hood though. I would walk right by thinking it was cloned, with no fender tag, and seeing a 68 grill and 69 hood.

Pretty sure you can trim a couple pieces of metal on the under side of a 68 hood to insert the 69 call outs

Could you do the reverse? Meaning fit the 68 call outs in the 69 hood?

Yes without any modification. But someone that knows the difference will spot the '69 hood when it's opened. Most won't know.
