The only ones that I would not agree with are the cuts to rail transportation. With the way this lousy government is forcing fuel prices up, people are going to need alternate forms of transportation. And people have already forgotten that when 9-11 shut down all air travel the only long distance travel option that was not shut down was rail. And you don't have to be groped to get on a train like you do to get on a plane!

I agree with you to a point. Believe me, I'm all for government subsides to the rail car industry since 90% of the products my company manufactures is for the local transit authorities and their vendors, so it keeps me in work. However, I drive to work every day and taking the train is not an option, if it were I'd use it. Basically what I'm trying to say is that people who are using the rails as their choice for commuting do so because they can, and it's more cost effective for them to do so. I'm not so sure that there will be a significant change in mass transit use over the population due to gas prices. Keeping in mind that transit fees rise as well. Since you're from Conn. I'm sure you've seen the constant debates over fare increases with Metro North and the NYCTA. It's neverending. :cents:

Mohair Subsidies?

Amtrak is a good thing to keep around but, our city light rail is kind of a joke. It only goes from downtown Mpls. to the airport and the mega mall. We have to spend $13 million a year to keep it operating. Not too much rider ship. After dark bring a gun. They are building another leg to downtown St. Paul which will cost $33 million a year. In the mean time a lot of business's are closing along the torn up busy street they are building it on. Including "Porky's" which was a local drive-in and hang out for muscle cars.

The 3 of you all have good points. There are some areas where while the idea may have been good, the choice of where these light rail systems were built was a poor one. Ct wants to build a 9 mile bus way along side of the main rail line that they say will move 7000 people a day and take cars off one of the major highways that is always jams up at rush hour. The cost just to build is $585 million, that does not include operating costs which I'll bet wont's be covered by fares. Because of where the city that this will start from is, to where it ends, I just don't see how this will accomplish what they claim it will. For a 1/4 of that cost they could up grade an existing rail line that would connect 4 large cities and every small community in between that covers a 35 or 40 mile corridor. Other problems with this is that Amtrak who owns that line that will run alongside has future plans to as a third line in this area and upgrade this section to high speed rail. The other problem is that there is talk to of a major highway rebuild in the area where the busway will end, which would mean that end of it would have to be rebuilt. Just plain stupid. As far as long distance travel goes they already subsidize both highways, and air travel to some extent, so that makes it hard to understand why they are always going after just passenger rail. If they take that alternative away, it will overload the remaining forms of transportation which is already close to the breaking point with overbooked flights and deteriorating, and overcrowded roads. Sorry for being long winded as you can tell this just bugs the sh!t our of me. BTW, I would use rail too but there is no line that goes by where I live. Ironically, I have a 3 mile ride to work, and the main line is right behind the plant, with the closest station just 3/4 of a mile away!

I use the rail system whenever I am in Europe...but it is a joke here...for all of the aforementioned reasons...

There was a push to get a rail system installed down here...Feds got involved...new Govenor told them to take their funds and everything else that came with it somewhere else...
