New project and first time builder

Looking over the drivers side quarter and started stripping in some areas that I figured there was filler and the common problem spots. I am wondering if its worth trying to save the quarter or just replace. Seems the going thing is to save as much original metal as you can. there was some thick filler on the side but it was just covering a dent with no rust then around the fender openings there was some rust but not as bad as I expected. Not sure what the other side looks like yet, what are your thoughts?IMG_5341.jpegIMG_5343.jpegIMG_5344.jpegIMG_5347.jpeg

I'm from the school that keeping as much original metal as possible is preferable. Having said that, cutting out the wheel opening and replacing it with new metal is a lot of work. IMO, It would be easier to replace the whole quarter panel. Personally if it was my project and it's only the wheel opening and the lower end of the quarter that's rotted, I would cut it out and weld in new metal. If keeping original panels is not that important to you, do whichever ever is less work.

Not too worried about keeping the original metal due to this car not being a completely numbers matching, no engine or trans and the drivers door, fender and hood have been replaced in the past. I was more concerned with complexity of patching vs fitting of AMD panel. I figured that the original metal would fit better but then again new metal is always nice to be able to open up the inter structure to treat. I still have a ways to get to replacing/patching so I have time to decide.

Replaced my quarters and many outer skin parts. Did not use the patch panels. Be it your choice but would rather have the hole panel and go from there. Best of luck with the project. It seems the longer you go the further you will get into it.

Up at the shop today and took some more pics of the problem areas so far. This is on drivers side, looks like it got dented in when it was
hit at some point.

This seem to be a repair because the original color is LimeLite green and this part is blue along with the fender and door.

New parts waiting to go in. Going to have a shop put the car on a rack to make sure everything is straight and have them weld in the new
frame rail and radiator support before I do anything to the car.

Here you can see the steel plates that have been welded to the frame rail.

You definitely have quite a project! I have a 1970 roadrunner. Had it since 1992. Just retired and now I can work on it. Best wishes to you!

Congratulations on retirement! I still have 11 years to go, wish I could retire early. Luckily with my job I get some decent time off in a row that helps me work on the car. Good luck on your project.
