During my restoration project, lots of "old school" guys I meet just love to talk about the 69 RR. Many of them say "those old big block Mopars are very torkie engines." Not sure I spelled "torkie" right, but what exactly do they mean? I have a VERY basic idea of "torque" and "horsepower" and don't want to beat a dead horse, but what does that mean? Is there any truth to it?

For example, a couple guys at the bar one night said "those old Mopars are better in the 1/4 mile than many cars with more horsepower because of how torkie they are." Of course, I'm paraphrasing, but you get the idea.

Any thoughts?

Have a great day!!

The best definition of torque that I know of, is when you wake up with a piss hard on and you go into the bathroom to pee and when you bend it down your feet come off the floor. Now that's torque :jester:

Bob, roger that!! LOL. That about sums it up. :) Body guy is getting all the rust spots on the underside torn out and welding in new sheet metal. Gotta get ready for work, will post pics later today.

Have a good one.

If you look at the Buick GS for instance lots of torque and the torque range was spread across the RPM range , that and it was big, 455ci. The mopar 440 is also a stump puller and was most affective with a six barrel set up to add ponies at the upper range. The 383 has more than adequate torque and with a short stroke the ability for added RPM's and horse power with some work. Torque was king on the street.

Another way of looking at it: It's not how fast you are going when you reach the finish line, but how fast you get to the finish line - make any sense?

Yes, totally makes sense. But, I guess my question is what makes these motors have the torque they do? Does it have something to do with the stroke, or some other way it was built? There must be some mechanical reason that they are rated with so much torque?

Best,

John

Its a combo of cubic inches, stroke, heads and cam. The difference between most truck motors and HP car motors is smaller port heads, milder cam and some times reduced compression and valve size. This brings all the torque down to a lower RPM range for pulling use and less horse power. Take a Hemi for instance, the max torque is for the most part the same as a 440 but its so far into the RPM range that the stump pulling affect is somewhat negated and it relates more into horse power, bigger heads, cam, valves and ports. A bone stock 440 vs a bone stock 426 hemi in like cars with an auto trans and tight converter to keep the rpm down such as stock, the 440 will leave the line quicker and that's what wins most street races. The same combo the farther they go and getting the weight of the car moving horse power will take over. A 4spd can even up the start but I think you will get what I'm saying.

OR, your car may be fast but is it quick ?

I don't suggest racing a Prius across an intersection either, electric motors are all torque they want max rpm and horse power right now with full voltage.

Horsepower is a mathmatical equation of torque. Torque is a measurement of work. A car that has a flat torque curve will not necessarily make big horsepower at high RPM, but will be a fast car. So when the convo turns to how "torquey" a motor is the Mopars shine because of the RPM the peak torque is and that it makes similar torque elsewhere in the power band. 69HemiBeep pretty much nailed it for the reason why Mopars are so fast for the HP numbers they make.

Thanks MoparChris, makes sense. I can't wait to get mine finished and feel that power. Hopefully in a few more months or so.
