Thoughts: A833 overdrive from 1978 Aspen.

A friend of mine has one of these and it's something I've been interested in doing. Has anyone done this or have any thoughts on it? It's from a 1978 Dodge Aspen. Would it bolt up or even fit to a 67 440?

there are some threads on this topic but the main problem is that the sturdiness of this tranny is a little shaky. 78 was low horsepower engines and your 440 isn't. need to check your numbers to see if it is for a big block or a small block. bolt pattern is different. there are some companies that make beefed up components for that tranny to help solve the toughness problem

You'd be making a lot of changes...to something not intended to live behind an RB. Could it? Sure, provided you babied it. There is a reason that Chrysler Engineers put Hemi A833s behind 440s.

Aluminum case to start with. And the F-body 4-gears are short tail shaft versions like the A-body versions. So you have to change the mainshaft and tailhousing or fab up a crossmember, driveshaft, and your shifter location is now also moved.

Gear vendors, Tremec, or a Passon 5-speed if you really need overdrive.:cents:

There's nothing stock about my car. Someone took out the 383 and Torque flight along time ago. The 440 is a "C" engine. 1967 from what I can figure. The tranny looks like a big ol' cast iron A833. I think the rear end is the only stock part of the entire drive train. I've seriously looked into the Tremec 6 speed but that a pricey way to go. Over 5K by the time it's said and done. Maybe more. Too much for me. I'm not familiar with the Passon, but I'm sure going to check it out. Thanks guys!

My daughter is on the list for the 5 speed but look at his OD conversion for the 4 speed you already have. I know several people that have done it and are happy!

The 3 speed with OD from a mid 80's /6 pickup is what you need. It has the long tail shaft, shifter is in the correct location, but you will have to modify the front bearing retainer to get it to fit into the bell housing.

it has been longer than that for that 5 speed. I have been on the list for 2 years so far and started out at 450 on the list. down about to 300 a while ago.
looks like about 2k to replace the guts on the tranny to get the overdrive from them

Funny you should mention that. I just found one of those on craigslist somewhat nearby. I'd be worried about it living behind a healthy 440 though...

Why not gear vendors? 2200 and it ships tomorrow and you can split gears for a quicker ET at the track. The aluminum OD transmissions have countershaft issues and most are junk. Also the front bearing retainer is larger than any other 4 speed. Mopar never made a bell housing to fit to that retainer. The bell housing needs to be machined.
