I have a 70 RR with what I think is a non-numbers matching 383HP. Just to be sure where should I be looking for the number to fit the vin# or fender tag? And of course the tranny as well?
Thanks! Got this off the block down low on the right side...246818012

From those numbers how do they decode? Is it linked to the vin# or the fender tag or both??

I see a machined pad that looks like where stamped numbers would be. Going to have to wire brush off some paint to verify. It appears the last 4 numbers on the tranny bell housing might match the Vin# Would that make it the D32 torqueflite auto it came with?

I wonder if those last four numbers of the vin could be stamped on the engine as well as the tranny, therefore indicating a match? I think the tranny might be a match, gotta get that# off the block.

Still searching that out. However it’s not the end of the world if it’s all non-matching. I backed tracked this car’s history somewhat before and after the sale. It had ping pong’d around in 2020 about 4 times and in all of that which included Mecum Auction in Kissimmee last year all owners said it was a very solid car..but never any mention of numbers matching. I would not have got it at the price I did if that were the case. Sorry to run on!
The #’s search rolls on!

That’s the casting number. The first 8 digits are the part number, the 12 is the number of times the casting was revised. The 6-20-68 is the casting date of the block. It’s totally possible that the block can be cast that far in advance of your cars assembly date.

on a flat of about 3” long, right above the oil pan rail in the passenger side, is the place where they stamped 69 and later motors. The VIN, or partial VIN should be stamped there, with at least the character size, date digit and the last 6 digits of the VIN the motor was destined for. This should match your body numbers and dash VIN.

there is also either a raised pad on the drivers side too, right in front of the valley pan for 413/426/440, or a machined of behind the distributor on 361/383/400. On that pad will have the digit date, the displacement, the assembly date, and could have other characters there as well to signify assembly corrections or HP blocks.

Well no match on the motor. But strong on the tranny. The radiator support has the vin from the dash and here’s a number from the top side right fender engine bay.
