That is what I love here, learn new stuff every day. Plus the scintillating conversations that arise as well. :bart:

Any car that was coded for road wheels in 1970 had a 2 inch red stripe painted around the drum so it would show through the openings of the wheel. This was done on the assy. line by taking a 2" paint brush and making a complete red stripe around the drum. Runs and drips are common.

Both options were called "Road Wheels"...correct? So...if one car was coded to run Rallyes' and one was coded to run Mag 500's how was it possible to even view the red stripe through such a narrow opening?

You can definitely see it through the road wheels. The slits are right up against the drums. Doubtful on the Rallyes...

Alright lets see a photo back in the day of what this looks like...I want to see a red drum/s gleaming through the wheel opening/s.

How many of you have your drums painted per the factory sheet? Specifically...all who own the 70 model year.

The only Road Runner that I have that is coded for road wheels is my '75 and it has the 2" red stripe on the rear drums. The ft has disc. My 69, 71, and 80 all had steel wheels and the drums do not have the red stripe around the drums.

Sounds like nothing is a standard with the RED stripe. If these cars were in a judging "points" style competition...would the RED stripe determine a winner? Just a thought...

AZ Desert,
Just finished cleaning and painting a set of road wheels and the centers are stainless steel welded to a steel rim and painted semi gloss. The owner actually has 4 real nice trim rings for them also. They should look better than my cop rimsDSCN0968.JPG DSCN0969.JPG

A nice set of original 69 trim rings is a very rare item indeed. This is the only year that they attach to outer most part of the rim.
