1970 440 Aluminum or Cast Six Barrel Intake Manifold

Is there any way to tell if a 1970 Road Runner would have had an aluminum edelbrock or cast intake manifold for the six barrel setup? I have read that both aluminum and cast units were used in 1970 and was hoping to learn what my car may have had so that I can perform an accurate restoration. Apparently some left over aluminum manifolds were used early on in 1970 but then that changed to Chrysler sourced cast units.

I would imagine that based on when my car was built it would have had a cast unit. Could I tell somehow from the VIN number? Aside from finding a used cast unit are there any restoration parts companies who have re-created them?

Is the motor a 440 or 426. I cant say that is what it came with. I would think it came with a cast iron intake. But not sure. The pro's here might have an idea. I don't see how Edelbrock intake would have been on it. More like after market some one put on it. Like my 383 has an Holley in take on it with the Holley carb. It is not stock. :beep:
 
Russ, you carry this forum. Can’t always be sure on parts even, may of had quotas to fill with no documentation and in those days anything went. Mentioned, was at a show and swore the road runner entry was cloned. I mean I didn’t care as car was immaculate. It didn’t have the pillar or swing out rear quarter windows and the steering wheel????

All wrong, learned Satellites were used in place of Belvederes whenever needed. One must be more rare than the other- I’d bet on Satellites with no pillar and roll down rear quarter window as being the lower number. Starting with ‘68 Plymouth was the winning ticket. Dodge had the Hemi also but wasn’t a road runner. Would even watch the cartoons on Sat. morning. And the horn.... had it in my ‘84 Daytona Turbo Z, those stories for another day.
 
Like ACME said unless you have an early build your 440 6bbl manifold was iron. And welcome aboard.

Thanks guys. I just bought my roadrunner project car. Originally it was a 383 but not has a period correct 440 HP motor. It has a 4-barrel manifold now. As I proceed I will be searching through these boards first, then asking questions if I can't find my answer. I enjoy learning about all the details of the car. These are some details of my project:

Vitamin C - original color
440 motor - not original
Air Grabber - original
Ralley Dash - original
Six Barrel setup - not original, want to add
4 speed manual - original

I am sure there are other details I am not including at the moment.

I will keep an eye out for a cast manifold to grab!

I had to search E bay to find my Four speed transmission. I got lucky found one in Co. got it for around 400 or 500. Got it reversed shipped Fed X. Upon going into it to rebuild it found it had already been done new shift fork's bearings and all. So It is a good place to search. If not maybe summit racing has it or speed way motors. That would be new of course. NOT OEM. Or try OEM to see if they have it. Russ.
 
I have a V-code 70 Roadrunner. 71 440 heavy rods, steel crank. It came with the aluminum 6bbl intake. If I needed to get one, I'd get the aluminum one anyway.
Also I clearcoated the bare aluminum. Not factory, but I like to show off the aluminum. I may get it polished or polished and chromed, or use a chrome powder coat one day. The aluminum looks gray with the clearcoat :( but I still prefer that to factory painted.

It look's good. Did you have it polished before you clear coated it. Just asking. I am looking into the silver paint coating process. Want to do somethings in my car instead of paying for chrome. You see this stuff being used every where now even on fiber glass. I love the 440 motor. I can be a bad ass engine. Russ.
 
Thanks Russ. No, straight from being media blasted to clear coat.
They look awesome polished, but I don't have the time, and it costs a LOT of money to have it done, but it is very labor intensive. I almost prefer polished aluminum to chrome, in this case for sure.
Maybe one day...

The difference in my purple stripe cammed, upgraded springs/locks/retainers, 6bbl equipped 71 440 and the stock 71 440 4bbl that was in my 71 Charger R/T back in 78 is literally night and day.
Once I got the 6bbl straight, MAN! When those outboard carbs open...what a RUSH!
 
:BangHead:Never painted a 6 pack manifold but could attest a regular heat resistant type paint would work quite well. Even worked on exhaust systems for awhile, much hotter than manifold would ever get. Pipes by engine would turn color pretty fast though; don’t put on too thick either, possible bubbling/chipping from heat & time.

Not on level of complete cars being painted of coarse at all. Every several years when kid would repaint my weights lol; that type of cast metal takes paint like it glues on, can’t mess up actually...... NO, not the plastic ones.

I have had 2 iron sixpack intakes and 2 alum sixpack intakes all on different cars over the years and currently have had 1 on my Charger for over 25 years. Never had one person look or ever ask if it was an iron or alum intake ever. I would go with an alum, paint it, no one will no the difference. Oh, and man are the iron intakes heavy. Almost a 2 person job to install. Lol.

Exactly. And he's building a clone so the only thing that matters is his happiness with the car. To me this isn't even a question. Aluminum ALL DAY LONG...
