Grille Paint

The Grille on the 69 is painted in specific areas a black color. Is there a specific black or is it just a flat black? Some pictures of exactly where it is painted and not would be helpful. thanks

Some one will chime in on this. On the old .org site one of the members did a step by step restore on a grill, I think it was Linemup hang in there :cheers:

I thought about tackling this...but I'm sitting here drinking some vino with the wife, I've got a little "glow" on, I'm watching some B-Ball, still laughing aloud about our new monikers, and thought "Nah, someone else will get this..."

I found this complete grill at Carlisle lst year. It is a used piece that had been repainted. Over all it looked very good, and was much better then what was on my car so I bought it. The only part of the repaint I'm not sure about is on the top of the center section. You can see where the section with the mounting holes is raised a bit from the front of it. On my original grill only the flat front area is painted up to where it angles up. From there to the back edge it is unpainted. The other '69s I've seen are like this, so I think that the way this grill was done is incorrect. Anyone want to chime in?

i did mine with a home brew of paint. for my driver, i think it looks pretty damn good. i think i used a semi flat or semi gloss. i will try to check. i might have kept some notes.

i went semi-gloss.....something that will hold up to road chips....i noticed that on your roadrunner that it wasnt painted......looks great when its done.....like a outlaw or something......haha

I did mine a few years ago with the paints from Totally Auto. It's like a satin/semi kind of black and dark argent silver I believe. It requires a lot of creative masking to get it done right but was well worth it.

I remember that now, I think it was one of the few women who were on the site. She always wrote in stead of her hubby, and I thought they were from the upper mid-west somewhere. Don't remember the name though.

I think one of the magazines did an article on restoring a Roadrunner grille. I think it was either Car Craft or Hot Rod.

Mac that looks good! So you did the black then the lighter color over it?

first i cleaned and polished all surfaces. masked off all everything else. sprayed on semi-flat black. let that dry good. masked off again the areas to be left black and then used a multi layer process. rust-loeum multicolor textured paint #223525 aged iron paint and silver. i did a lot of practice until i got what i thought looked good on an old headlight bezel. the trick for me was finding the right distance to spray to get the texture i wanted and the right look of the silver. practice, practice, practice. this of course was done when the snow if flying so i had the time to play.

Your first photo of the grille looks exactly like mine. So to be clear you masked off the areas that were to be polished metal.....painted everything black. Next step was to paint the inside of the headlight bezels and the inside of the horizontal grille inserts a silver-grey color? The finished product is awesome. My original thought was that it was all semi flat black except for the polished metal areas. The silver grey is a new one for me. Thanks

i have an original grill to compare with where the different finishes go. i know it isn't "factory correct", but it looks close enough for me.

i had it all polished and after it was masked off i used a scotch brite pad to just give it a dull look before the paint.
