Tires and Wheels

If you want to stay "period correct" then Rallye wheels on a '69 road runner is "wrong." If you don't care and like the look of them on your car then go for it! Keep in mind there are 2 types of center caps for the Rallye wheels. 70-71 and 72-up. The 70-71 use a cone and dish type of center cap painted dark argent (almost black). The 72-up center caps are larger in diameter and have scallops in them for lug nut clearance. For your car I would recommend the 70-71 style since;
1) I think they look better :D
2) They would be more "period correct" for your car.
 
My car had rallyes on it when I bought it. It had the '72 and up center caps. And to be honest I wasn't aware that they were the wrong wheels for a '69. They were starting to get a lot of pitting on them and was one reasons I wanted to do something with them. I was at first considering the replace the center caps only. I had already found new trim rings at Carlisle for a good price. Well, seeing that the prices for just the caps was getting kind of high, and the fact that I prefer my cars to be "factory appearing," I finally deceided to find a set of steel wheels and dog dishes. I found some wheels that were date correct, not real important to me but still nice, and at a good price. It turned out to be a break even deal because as I made the deal for the wheels, someone else wanted my old rallyes, and for the same price! The pic is the best one I could find of it with the rallyes. For the new guys, my car is the one nearest to the camera.

MC has this almost correct... Please allow for one small edit:

1970 use a light argent center cap. The dark argent center cap is correct for 1971 only.

As for which centers to use on your car, go with whatever fits your budget and floats your boat - they weren't available for '69 so you can throw all of the "correct restoration tips" out the window anyway... I ran 15X7 Rallyes off of an AAR on my C3 (B3 - depending on which source you reference) '69 RR back in the early eighties. Used the '72 and later centers and had people tell me all the time how nice the wheel and tire combo was on that car...

My friend has a green AAR with a really cool wheel combination. He has cop car wheels with small Dodge "poverty" caps and trim rings. It looks stock.. but it looks different and you have to look at it for a minute before you figure it out.

Big, I'll agree with Acme, use whatever you like in terms of centers. Its your car and you need to be happy with it. What I like about this site is that none of us are sticklers for detail. Make it whatever you want it to be and be happy driving it. If someone else has a problem with the way you've done your car that's their problem - not yours! All I ask is that when you get the wheels and tires on your car post some pics for us! :thumbsup:
 
Haven't heard anything back from Halibrand yet about my LHT lugnuts...or when the wheels are shipping...starting to get antsy... :toetap:

I'm heading over to Germany at the end of the month for an aircraft interiors show and I'll be gone for a week. I was kind of hoping to get the wheels mounted before I leave...looks like that may not happen... :(

Guess I'll have something to look forward to upon my return...

Between my laptop and my blackberry I know what's going on here most of the time...you'd probably never even know I was gone other than the odd times that I'll be on the site due to the time change... I'll be in Seattle next week for what it's worth... :D

And I was serious about visiting your buddy's MoPar warehouse sometime...you're just a short hop from SoCal...and I get out there quite frequently...

Germany is one place I'd love to visit. Lots of history, and a beautiful country.
 
Dave, you're right - it is a beautiful place. I get to go to Hamburg every year for this same show. Took the wife with me two years ago and took some vacation time after the show. After a couple of days in Hamburg we rented a car and drove to Berlin for a couple of days. We spent one night right downtown - within walking distance from Checkpoint Charlie. They have a Checkpoint Charlie museum there. It was very humbling to see everything related to the wall, the cold war, and the suffering of those trapped behind the wall. The whole thing was just an unbelieveable experience.

Halibrand update: They have my LHT lugnuts! Wheels are shipping on Tuesday...which means they will probably arrive just after I leave... Oh well, at least I now know the schedule!

When I called home last night to talk with my wife she told me that my Halibrands had just arrived. I'll be over here in Hamburg until Sunday morning - so now I'm getting anxious to get home...as I've got some wheels & tires to get mounted and put on the RR...

I'm thinking black sidewalls out - what do you guys think???

I'll pass on the wide whites and curb feelers...those were Hemi-only options... :lmao:

No shortage of brew here...and they have no problem setting a liter mug down in front of you...those are some big damned beer mugs...

Your right about the size of the German beer mugs. they don't mess around.

I like the blackwalls out myself. I've never been a fan of white letter tires.
