ENGINE OIL...

Same reason as ACMEA12. Also was recommended by my engine builder
 
Whatever brand you decide on, I'd use the least viscous oil you can that provides adequate oil pressure. Unless your engine bearings are shot, I'd start with a 0W, 5W, 10W-30 already formulated with higher zinc. Avoid the backyard home brew game with aftermarket additives. There are many good options out there for the above.
 
I have used this oil for many years and I change the oil every year before storage. I try to get 1000mi per year but don't always make it. The weather in Alberta Canada is not the same as CA USA. The oil is specially formulated for flat lifter engines and contains primary ZDDP, and secondary ZDDP (which activates at lower temperatures, ie: upon start up when the worst wear can occur).

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm the president of Chart Distribution Group in St. Louis, MO which is a bulk oil distribution company. I heartily agree on the need for API spec product. I also am a big fan of starting and warming the engine to get all contaminants fully into suspension before draining the oil. Otherwise, whatever has settled to the bottom of the pan is there waiting to contaminate the new oil.
 
Nice, use 5-50wt synthetic these days 9qts, but back then- think it was 10-30wt Quaker State. Only 5 quarts or something like that for 383 wedge. Synthetic not yet invented......
